The Coffee Bean’s Vanilla Peppermint Tea Latte just made my day merry again. The man sitting next to me looks like he used to be that young, hip high school math teacher that everyone always loves—math only because he has two protractors on the table with him—the math teacher who gets that math isn’t necessarily fun, but that he can be fun. His hair is greying a bit now, though he’s still wearing Vans, and he’s drawing scribbles on 5″ x 5″ cutouts of white corkboard. Big, loopy, slippery scribbles with a dry erase marker. Is it a holiday project for his students tomorrow, before school lets out for two weeks? Or, is he making his own Christmas cards, eccentric notes that both bring season’s greetings and also illuminate the congruent angles of a perfect snowflake (a snowflake, as abstract in this land of sunshine as a derivative is to a high schooler).
